Rather than starting with the same depth T4 eventually attained, they’ve opted to go with the absolute bare minimum, presumably so that they can portion out all the other T4 buildings in $5 DLC packs (Penultimo would be proud). The sheer number of structures that a fully DLCed T4 had at its disposal was truly grand. All of these challenges and any cut scenes and dialogue are all done for comedic effect and usually give me a chuckle… at least the first couple times I hear it. Some of these challenges are mandatory for advancement through the game, and some of these are optional, giving benefits for completing goals that the player may find convenient or completely disastrous. Throughout the game challenges are issued to the player. Over the years you’ll meet the challenges of rebellion, unrest, elections, housing, pollution, trade, education, imperialism, warfare, global politics, growth and city management, mostly by building the right mix of buildings in the right locations, micromanaging them and issuing edicts that come with some trade off. Tropico 5 opts completely for the latter.įor those unfamiliar with the series, Tropico thrusts you into the role of ruler of leader of a Caribbean banana republic and challenges you to grow both your nation and the balance of your Swiss bank account.

It’s hard to find the right compromise between satisfying fans of the series by expanding the amount of content in interesting ways and making the game accessible to new players. yet the overlays for plantations always seem to stay green no matter what, but the overlays for ranches seem to fluctuate even if you take careful precautions not to remove trees and not to put industry near them. It’s difficult being the 5th installment of a game like Tropico. has anyone figured out the overlays for ranches? let's say you put a cattle ranch in a green area where you get something like +40 location bonus, in year or two you go back to that ranch and now the area it's in is yellow and you've got negative location bonus. when it comes to graphics they have applied some sort of FXAA blur over the buildings when you zoom out far enough, but you can't disable FXAA specifically, you have to turn down post-processing to remove it and that also seems to disable some other graphical features as well.īut really these are minor nitpicky stuff, i'm quite addicted to the city-building and micromanagement aspects.

there are no hotkeys for movement, so you are forced to move the camera via dragging your mouse to the edges of the screen instead of a simple WASD setup which i always use in most games. why? there is a hotkey to fast forward in time, but there is no hotkey to pause, which i'm constantly clicking. you've got about only a dozen available hotkeys for miscellaneous stuff, and then you have like 5 pages of available hotkeys for each building. What i think it's missing is more customization, for example the hotkeys are a total disaster. I'm clearly doing something wrong, but I'm getting complacent because of my previous Tropico experiences. I keep losing in T5 and they aren't flukes. In T4 I used to play at 150% difficulty and breeze through the game. Unlike previous Tropicos, it isn't just a time burner with great music and atmosphere. Like one idiot at a well known gaming site was complaining about colonial infantry fighting modern rebels. Some of the reviews I've read obviously didn't even play long enough to see how these work.

The upgrade and manager system is great too. Hell, I lost an election (possibly the first one ever) with 65% approval going in. Much more oriented on the people than simple linear economy and buying your way out of it. Haven't even tried MP yet and it is for sure a "new" Tropico and its the best of the series IMO. Either I get stomped by the Allies when I won't pay or the rebels burn me out. I was buying gold off of the pirates and then reselling it to the crown.then the pirates would raid the crown. I actually had an event that allowed me to trade gold with the crown. Its not going to be a revolution.where would you go with it after all? Move setting? Why? The trading function is a solid one.

It is still Tropico though, so I'm not really sure what people were expecting.
